What is surface finishing?

  • Surface finishing refers to the protection of base materials by modifying the surface of the material or coating it with a layer of other materials. Material damage and failure mostly start from surface damage, so surface treatment technology for materials emerged at the times required.
  • In the rapid prototyping manufacturing industry, various surface treatment methods are used. Surface treatment can improve the appearance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, hardness, strength, and other characteristics of the product. The finishing services at DMTC are as follows:

1. As machined

Machined surfaces are a common surface treatment. The surface finish roughness of the CNC machining part is Ra0.2-Ra3.2. There are usually surface treatments such as deburring and sharp edges. This surface can be used for all materials.

2. Polishing

Polishing refers to the surface treatment method that uses mechanical, chemical, or electrochemical effects to reduce the surface roughness of the workpiece to get a bright and smooth surface.

3. Sandblasting

Sandblasting is a surface treatment that uses the impact of high-speed sand flow to clean and roughen the surface of the parts to obtain a certain degree of cleanliness and roughness.

4. Anodized aluminum finish

Anodized aluminum finish is a metal surface finish that uses electrochemical oxidation of aluminum alloy to form an oxide film on the surface of parts, which can prevent wear and oxidation of parts and increase the aesthetic effect. Different colors can be achieved on the part surface. This surface finish is only suitable for aluminum parts.

5. Black oxidation

Black oxidation is a commonly used chemical surface treatment method for steel material. It can produce an oxide film on the metal surface to isolate air and achieve rust prevention. The black oxidation surface treatment improves the corrosion and wear resistance of the part and enhances its overall aesthetics

6. Electroplating

Electroplating is the process that creates a thin metallic coating on the metal surface which can prevent metal oxidation, improve wear resistance, and corrosion resistance, and enhance aesthetics. The surface of the parts can also be plated with copper, nickel, silver, or gold. This metal surface finish is only suitable for metal parts.

7. Painting

painting is a surface treatment method of spraying a layer of paint on the surface of a part. The color can be modulated according to customer needs, and the surface can be matte, bright, or metallic.

8. Powder coating

This process is a dry spraying method, which is used on the parts through electrostatic powder spraying. The powder is electrostatically adsorbed on the surface of the parts and then solidified under heating to make it flow and form a surface on the parts. It is suitable for surface spraying of plastics, glass, and metal parts, it is mainly used for protection or coloring.

9. Brushed Finishing

Brushed finishing is a surface treatment method that uses grinding products to form linear surface texture on the surface of the workpiece to achieve a decorative effect.

10. Passivation

Passivation is a common metal surface finish in CNC machining to improve the surface quality and performance of parts. After the machining process, the surface of the part may develop microscopic roughness or surface impurities that can negatively affect the part's performance over time. Passivation can help alleviate these problems.

11.Heat treatment

Heat treatment is a metal processing process that uses heating, insulation, and cooling to obtain materials with expected structures and properties. Heat treatment can improve the hardness, wear resistance, seizure resistance, strength, and corrosion resistance of steel, as well as adjust the chemical composition and structure of its surface.

What factors should be considered when choosing to finish services for CNC machining parts?

Material: some surface finishes only can be used for specific materials. For example, anodizing is typically used on aluminum parts, and electroplating is used for the conductive metal parts.

Function: Surface finish should be decided depending on the functional requirements of the part. For example, components that need high wear or corrosion resistance may require a stronger surface finish, such as an Anodized aluminum finish or plating finish. Parts that need aesthetics will require different surface finishes with different color and texture options.

Cost: Some finishes may be more expensive and some finishes cheaper. Such as powder coating is much more expensive than regular paint. Therefore, it is important to consider cost, function, and delivery time to choose the suitable surface finish.

Delivery Time: Different surface finishing requires different times to complete. if you need a product quickly, you can choose a simpler finishing method that can be finished quickly, such as polishing. And if you have more time and need a higher qua finish, you can choose anodizing which can provide a more precise and beautiful finish.

Environmental Impact: It is important to consider the environmental influence of the surface finishes the process and all people should as much as possible choose friendly processes for the environment.
